Książka w interesujący sposób przedstawia specyfikę regionu bałkańskiego, w którym po upadku systemów komunistycznych nastąpiła międzynarodowa interwencja sił zachodnich w obliczu konfliktów zbrojnych, które przeciągnęły się na całą dekadę, powodując zmianę granic państwowych, zaś na obszarach nieogarniętych konfliktem obawę o integrację terytorialną państw. Międzynarodowe interwencje pokojowe (ONZ) i zbrojne (NATO) przeobraziły się w aktywny udział przy wdrażaniu politycznych procesów, związanych z budową państw, ich ustrojem, systemem politycznym czy utrzymaniem stabilnego bezpieczeństwa w regionie. Czas jednak pokazał, że regionalna tożsamość, osadzona w historii społeczeństw bałkańskich, odrzuca bezkrytyczną adaptację wzorców, norm i wartości świata zachodniego, kreując własną, może nie do końca pożądaną przez wszystkich, rzeczywistość.
