The monograph comprehensively addresses the security of critical infrastructure in highly urbanised areas.
The authors introduce the reader to the issues of broadly understood national security. They characterize the security environment at the global and regional level, indicating the most important processes shaping the security of Poland, Europe and the world. In addition to globalisation, computerisation and European integration, they emphasise the importance of intensive urbanisation processes and the formation of large urban agglomerations.

Intensive construction development and high population density place very high and sometimes even extreme demands on the critical infrastructure of large urban agglomerations. This is due to the high load on individual critical infrastructure systems, which promotes breakdowns and interruptions in residents‘ access to basic services. Even more difficult situations arise in the case of natural disasters or criminal human activities, such as terrorist attacks on critical infrastructure. Therefore the most extensive chapter of the monograph is devoted to threats to critical infrastructure in highly urbanised areas.

The monograph is a concise source of knowledge in the field of security science. The issue of critical infrastructure protection was presented against the background of the functioning of the national security system. The role of the public administration and operators of this infrastructure in ensuring its proper functioning was stressed. Forecasts of changes in the area of security of critical infrastructure systems in large urban agglomerations were also presented.
